Our methods
There is no single best way to clean every roof. We look at the tile type, the age and condition of the roof and the level of growth, then explain what we recommend and why.
Our preferred method when suitable
When your tiles are suitable we use a flat surface cleaner rather than a lance, so the water pressure is spread evenly and gently. The only thing that touches your tiles is water, and the improvement is instant.
Best for light algae and staining
A low-pressure chemical treatment that kills organic growth and lightens staining. Ideal for lightly soiled or more delicate roofs, or as follow-up maintenance after a full clean.
Available on request
Moss is physically scraped off by hand and a biocide is then applied to kill the remaining spores. It is often seen as the safest option, but in our experience metal tools can crack or dislodge brittle and weathered tiles.

Moss
The most common problem on UK tiled roofs. It thrives on damp, shaded, north-facing slopes, holds water like a sponge, causes frost damage, loosens tiles and blocks gutters as it falls.
Algae
Dark green or black streaks and stains, most often on concrete tiles and slate. It rarely damages tiles directly but ruins the look of a home and usually leads to moss if it is left.
Lichen
Hard crusty white, grey or orange patches. More stubborn than moss or algae, it grows slowly on older roofs and can etch into the tile surface if left untreated.
Grime & pollution
Dust, soot, bird droppings and traffic pollution build up on roadside and town properties, dulling the colour of the roof and speeding up staining.
